Dead Opossum Removal in Missouri
Opossums, or possums, move in under porches, decks, sheds and crawl spaces, so the first sign of a dead one is usually the smell rather than the animal. Where it lies decides how it is reached.
Before you pay anyone. Make sure it is dead and not playing dead. A live opossum is a live-animal problem, which this site does not pass on. If it may have bitten or scratched someone, or touched a pet, do not throw it away. Call your doctor or local public health agency first, or the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) on 573-751-6113 (after hours 800-392-0272).
What this covers
- An opossum in a yard or garden.
- An opossum under a deck, porch or shed reached through an existing opening.
- An opossum in a crawl space reached through the access door.
Where the limit is
This site does not pass on live opossums, trapping, relocation, or work to close the gaps they use. A carcass sealed inside a wall is covered as information only.
Wild animals in Missouri belong to the state dead or alive (RSMo 252.020 and 252.030). The Missouri Department of Conservation's published advice for a wild animal carcass, written for animals removed because they were damaging property, is to bury it or bag it for regular trash. MDC also advises wearing gloves and washing your hands if you handle one.
An opossum is a mid-sized animal, and under a deck or in a crawl space, out of the sun and the wind, the smell usually hangs on longer than it would in the open. Heat and damp make it worse. No one can give a date.
How a call goes
- Call or send the form with your ZIP code and where the opossum is.
- Say how it can be reached: an existing gap, a crawl-space door, an access panel.
- If an operator covers your ZIP code, you settle the price and timing with them directly.
- If an operator takes the job, the opossum is bagged and taken for disposal.
Questions about this animal
Is it a possum or an opossum?
Same animal. "Possum" is the everyday name for the Virginia opossum.
Can an opossum be pulled out from under a low deck?
Usually, where there is a gap in the skirting or a board that lifts without cutting. Say how low the deck sits and where the gaps are, so access can be judged on the call.
